Mamajuana: what is this?

Mamajuana is a traditional alcohol from the Dominican Republic. It consists of rum, vine leaves, tree bark and fruit. It has a specific taste and smell, its main ingredients are considered as aphrodisiacs. You can find mamajuana in the bars, liquor shops in all Caribbean region.

The herbs that’s make mamajuana were used in pre-Columbus times by Taino Indians as infusion.

Dominicans believe that mamajuana is a kind of panacea. They are using it to cure diseases, broken heart and also problems with male-female relationships.

Mamajuana — alcohol

Mamajuana is an alcohol prepared by Dominicans, it is consisted of rum, red vine mix, dried herbs, tree bark, medical herbs and fruit. 

Traditionally in the Dominican Republic, mamajuana as treated as health drink which is used to cure several diseases.

Mamajuana is sweet and a little bitter. The ingredients which are used traditionally are: cinnamon, cardamom, anise, cloves, bay leaves, ginger, ginseng, lemon peel, lime, tree bark, raisins and honey. All these ingredients are pulled over with alcohol and this mixture left to maceration for few weeks or months. Of course, every Dominican family has their own recipe form mamajuana and they add also other ingredients.

Mamajuana is a popular drink in the Dominican Republic, so you can find it easily in every shop, restaurant or bar.

In the tourist places, on stalls with souvenirs they have sometimes mamajuana for the visitors. If you want to try this mamajuana, firstly check the alcohol condition, because often it isn’t stored in properly way, and leftover herbs can be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Mamajuana — dried mamajuana

Dried mamajuana is a herbal product which is used to medical purposes or as a psychedelic agent. A classic drought is made from the anamú plant (Petiveira alliacea), which is used in natural medicine, anise, basil, cinnamon, cloves and the plant which grows in the Dominican Republic – Bohuco Pega Palo (Cissus verticillata), whose ingredients help to cure diabetes.

How to drink mamajuana?

Mamajuana can be served in the glass, as a shot also as a drink ingredient! Classic mamajuana is served at room temperature.

What is the mamajuana price in 2024?

Mamajuana – price in Dominican Republic

The mamajuana price in the Dominican Republic depends on the place where you want to buy it. In the liquor shops, it costs from a few American dollars for ready to drink alcohol, but the price can differ between different shops. In the restaurants or bars, the prices start from 10 USD. Remember also that the mamajuana price on the beach stalls and in the hotel shops will be much bigger, so don’t forget to negotiate the price!

Mamajuana: where you can buy it?

You can find easily mamajuana in every liquor store, supermarkets and restaurants in the Dominican Republic. In Dominican supermarkets you can find ready to drink filtered alcohol, ready to drink alcohol with herbs inside or dried mamajuana to prepare on your own. 

Mamajuana isn’t such popular in the North America or in Europa, but you can find it in special liquor shops or in the Dominican liquor shops. You can find mamajuana also online.
